The 70's

As a young man, Daniel Sommerfeld was exposed to the beauty of jewelry as he studied the completed pieces of an American designer in a magazine who at the time, was touted as being the best in the world. Following his curiosity, Daniel set out to discover for himself how such wonderful creations were made. He spent all of his spare time researching and found the answers to his questions lay in the ancient art of goldsmithing. Intrigued with the knowledge that all of the processes required to complete a masterpiece were within his grasp, he plunged himself in to the depth and breadth of the trade and set a goal of becoming the best jewelry maker in the world.

In 1978, under the tutelage of master goldsmith, Elias Chistogeorge, Daniel learned the basic metal techniques used for creating and repairing jewelry while contributing pieces to retail stores and wholesalers. On the side, his reputation for custom design and impeccable workmanship ignited demand for his personal line of engagement and wedding rings.

The 80's

After completion of a four-year apprenticeship in Vancouver, BC, Daniel opened his first retail gallery and studio in Campbell River. He hired master goldsmiths from around the world and trained apprentices while continuing to study advanced jewelry making techniques. During this period, Daniel was satisfied that he had mastered the art of goldsmithing, designing, diamond and stone setting and lapidary and completed his first original masterpieces.

The Inventor - the proof is in the alloy

Holding fast to his commitment to produce jewelry of the highest quality, Daniel immersed himself in to the research and development of proprietary alloys defining his personal standard for beauty, exceptional strength, and longevity. The gorgeous rich colors and liquid luster produced from the proprietary formulas is unsurpassed, giving rise to demand for exquisite Sommerfeld settings at home and abroad.

The 90's and beyond

Inspired by the breath taking beauty of Waterton Lakes National Park and the desire to build family faith through connection in a small community, Daniel moved his family and opened Waterton Lost Art Jewelry and Studio where he manages all aspects of jewelry production to this day. Guided by a strong set of family values, the business is deeply rooted in family spirit with Daniel's wife Lori managing business operations and his daughter Caroline apprenticing alongside her dad hoping to become a goldsmith herself one day.
